Happy birthday Bitcoin! 

 

As the world’s first cryptocurrency turns 15 today, it enters a new year that may prove to be the most consequential since its inception. The macro landscape, the forthcoming halving, and spot ETFs in the US are some of the factors that could push bitcoin to a new all-time high and accelerate global adoption.  

To understand Bitcoin’s evolution, we often talk to our clients about how its growth is following a path similar to the internet. So a fair question today might be, where was the internet 15 years after its creation? 

Well, if the internet was officially “born” on January 1, 1983 with the TCP/IP standard, then on its 15th birthday in 1998 Google didn’t exist, dial-up connections were the norm, and there were only a few hundred million users.  

The internet’s transformation over the decade that followed—including the widespread adoption of broadband, the development of “Web2” platforms like Facebook and YouTube, and the number of users reaching one billion—is a useful analogy for investors to understand the impact that bitcoin may have in the coming years. 

 

  

 

This is part of the reason why we refer to bitcoin as a generational investment. Like the internet, bitcoin is a once-in-a-generation innovation that is providing investment opportunity for those that recognize how it is disrupting traditional finance and improving access to financial services across the globe.

So as we celebrate Bitcoin today, it’s important to remember that disruptive innovation does not appear overnight. It takes a long time for people to understand the impact of a new technology. After a decade and a half of existence, it looks like Bitcoin’s time has arrived.
